In Christchurch there is great diversity within the Department of Surgery in terms of clinical and research interests and, if anything, this is increasing as we move towards a greater degree of sub-specialisation.
Long gone are the days of true general surgery, but historically, the Department of Surgery has always encompassed more than what we now call general surgery.
Department of Surgery clinical personnel include clinical lecturers in Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular and Transplant Surgery, and Urology, in addition to the general surgical sub-specialties (upper gastrointestinal / hepatobiliary, colorectal, breast / endocrine surgery).
