The Department of Surgery and Critical Care (Christchurch) encompasses nine surgical subspecialties, anaesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine. We deliver excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching and internationally recognised research.

Undergraduate MB ChB teaching

The Department provides a range of surgical expertise and experiences for medical students undertaking the MB ChB programme.  Our staff teach into the 4th, 5th and Trainee Intern years and provide clinical opportunities in General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, ICU, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Urology.

During the rotations students attend structured tutorials, outpatient clinics, operative sessions and acute on-call incidents.

Postgraduate teaching

The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences, endorsed in Continence Management, is delivered by the Urology Section of our Department.

This distance learning programme is aimed at nurses, physiotherapists and those doctors wishing to improve their understanding of continence problems and how they can best be alleviated. Offered through the University of Otago, Christchurch, it runs alternate years, sequentially in the first and second semesters.
