Build advanced expertise in an area of care that makes a meaningful difference to everyday lives.
Continence Management is a specialised area of healthcare that combines clinical skill, empathy, and evidence-based practice.
Continence issues affect people of all ages and are closely linked to physical health, mental wellbeing, and quality of life. Otago’s distance-taught Continence Management papers offer advanced training in assessment, management, and support for people experiencing bladder and bowel conditions. You will be supported to engage with current research and best practice in continence care and apply them thoughtfully to your own clinical practice.
This subject suits health professionals who want to strengthen their expertise, contribute to improved care, and advocate for person-centred approaches in clinical and community settings.
Studying Continence Management supports professional development within health and disability services.
Graduates may use their training to strengthen their practice or move into more specialised roles.
This subject is designed for working health professionals who want to study while continuing in practice.
Our two Continence Management papers are taught sequentially across semesters one and two and are delivered primarily through Distance Learning from the University of Otago’s Christchurch campus. Most of your study is completed online, through evening video conferences and self-directed learning modules that allow you to engage from wherever you are based. Short on-campus block courses provide valuable opportunities for practical learning, discussion, and connection with staff and peers.
This subject is designed for registered nurses, physiotherapists and doctors who want to improve their understanding of continence problems and best practices for managing them. Applicants should have at least two years’ post-registration experience and be working in a field that involves some aspects of continence management.
