Background and Research Interests

Professor John Barsby, who is a graduate of Cambridge University, retired from the Chair of Classics in January 2002. He has taught widely in Greek and Latin language and literature; on the research side he has written articles on Catullus and Propertius as well as books on Ovid, Plautus, and Terence. He has recently completed a new Loeb edition of Terence and edited a collection of essays on Greek and Roman drama. He is currently writing a history of the Otago Classics Department. He was awarded the ONZM for services to Classics in New Zealand in 2002.
