Research

Research in the field of tissue engineering and material science has led to significant progress in the field of regenerative endodontics but it is still in its infancy and specific materials have not being adapted for routine clinical procedures. Use of materials that can act as scaffold to regenerate pulp and dentine will be of benefit to patients and especially the young (age 6–15 years). Currently pulpotomy and pulpectomy procedures cannot regenerate lost tissue, while pulpotomy outcomes on carious exposed pulp are variable. The potential of regenerative materials will be to improve retention of teeth, minimise time-consuming (and as a result expensive) procedures, e.g. root canal therapy and apexification, potentially improve pulpotomy outcomes on carious exposures thereby reducing the need for root canal therapy, and will improve the well-being of patients.
