I am extremely pleased to have this opportunity to introduce you to the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago. The Faculty has a team of staff who are at the leading edge of their profession who have an international reputation for excellence in research, education and clinical service.
Research is one of the core activities of academic staff and postgraduate students and is carried out within the Sir John Walsh Research Institute. Current activities cover a broad spectrum of research aligned to the following programmes: Biomechanics and oral implantology; Clinical and translational research; Craniofacial biology and clinical oral physiology; Dental education research; Dental epidemiology and public health; Molecular microbiology; and Oral molecular and immunopathology.
In addition to our three undergraduate programmes, which are Dentistry, Oral Health and Dental Technology we offer opportunities and excellent facilities for postgraduate education in all the clinical specialties. In association with the Southern DHB specialist clinical support is also provided for the Otago population and specialists in the Faculty provide support to the dental profession throughout New Zealand through advice, continuing education courses, and serving on national bodies.
The Faculty is also fortunate to be able to attract many internationally renowned scholars, who either choose to spend time undertaking research at the Faculty, or who are invited under the auspices of the Faculty's Professional Development Committee.
The Faculty of Dentistry offers a friendly environment for postgraduate training and education. I hope you will join our stimulating academic community and I look forward to possibly welcoming you in the future.
