Radiography courses for dental hygienists and dental therapists

About the course

The Faculty of Dentistry, University of Otago, is running radiography courses for practising dental hygienists and dental therapists. Dental therapists are eligible to register for the intra-oral radiography module, and dental hygienists are eligible to register for one or both of the intra-oral and extra-oral modules (as per Dental Council Scope of Practice Competencies).

Intra-Oral Radiography Module

This one-day module offers the opportunity for dental therapists and dental hygienists to access training in intra-oral radiography. By the end of this course, you will be able to safely take, orientate, and interpret intra-oral radiographs, and on completion of the module requirements, you will be able to apply for the removal of the intra-oral radiography exclusion from your scope of practice. The on-site course includes two-and-a-half hours of theoretical learning and four hours of practical experience.

Extra-Oral Radiography Module

This one-day module offers the opportunity for dental hygienists to access training in extra-oral radiography. By the end of this course, you will be able to safely take, orientate, and interpret extra-oral radiographs, and on completion of the module requirements, you will be able to apply for the removal of the extra-oral radiography exclusion from your scope of practice. The on-site course includes three hours of theoretical learning and four hours of practical experience.

In-practice requirements (both modules)

For both the intra- and extra-oral modules, participants will be required to take and interpret a number of radiographs in their own practice, and complete a logbook, prior to being issued with a completion letter and certificate to apply to the Dental Council for removal of the exclusion/s on your scope of practice. An appropriately-registered and experienced supervisor must be on-site with you when completing patient cases, and will need to agree to act as a mentor prior to you commencing the relevant course.
