We are involved in undergraduate teaching into Otago's Medical Programme at both the Early Learning in Medicine stage (ELM) and at the Advanced Learning in Medicine stage (ALM).
Early Learning in Medicine (ELM)
Second- and third-year students
We teach into the second- and third-year Reproduction and Ageing course, the clinical skills program, and early professional education courses. Staff also participate in guest lectures for other areas of the curriculum, such as integrated cases and genetics.
Advanced Learning in Medicine (ALM)
Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-year students
During the fifth year of medical training there is a six-week attachment to Paediatrics and Child Health. During this attachment students are given clinical experiences in the paediatric ward and neonatal intensive care, as well as assisting to manage acutely unwell children, observing with clinicians when children come in to see a paediatrician and learning more about child development as well as other conditions of childhood. It is a busy 6 weeks and students are immersed in the learning of child health. This is followed by a further 2-weeks in youth health.
In the sixth year of medical training (the trainee intern year) there is a four-week rotation in Paediatrics and Child Health, with a focus on practical involvement in the management of infants in neonatal intensive care, the paediatric ward, and outpatient settings.
