Biography

Professor Blaikie received the BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Otago, New Zealand, in 1988 and the PhD degree in physics from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1992. For one year, he was a visiting scientist at the Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory, investigating single-electron transport effects in semiconductor nanostructures. He returned to New Zealand in 1993, taking up a position in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Canterbury prior to moving to his current role at Otago.

Current research includes:

Nanophotonics – super-resolution optical lithography Plasmonics and related surface-wave phenomena, deep sub wavelength optical field confinement for sensing and imaging, intense lighting and transient luminous events (e.g. red sprites)

Micro- and Nano-fabrication – optical and electron beam lithography fabrication technologies for novel applications

Electronic Device Engineering – single-electron logic and memory devices and novel nano-electronic devices
