It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome you to Ngā Whare Rītī o Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka | University of Otago Flats (UniFlats) – a unique, diverse, and vibrant community of over 900 students from across Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world.

This might just be one of the most exciting chapters of your life, living somewhere new, meeting people from everywhere, and working things out as you go. It’s your time to grow, embrace new challenges and environments, and most importantly explore and find yourself! Be open to new experiences, engage in random discussions with fellow students, join in on events and activities and make sure you make the most or your time at the University of Otago. Be curious. Be real. Bring your whole self. This is your home away from home!

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata.

What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

Our community is built on strong values – and we live them every day:

  • Whanaukataka – building lasting relationships
  • Manaakitaka – caring for and uplifting others
  • Atawhai – showing kindness and generosity

At the University Flats, we are committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming environment. This involves a shared responsibility to care for one another, our living spaces, and ourselves. While mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, we expect all residents to take accountability for their actions, reflect on experiences, and demonstrate integrity as they move forward.

As you begin your time with us, we strongly encourage you to read your College handbook thoroughly. It contains essential information to support your transition into the community. Should anything be unclear, please do not hesitate to seek clarification.

My door remains open to you, whether you require support, guidance, or simply wish to connect

Once again, nau mai, haere mai – welcome! We’re so glad you’re here. Wishing you an incredible year ahead.
