Understanding international tuition fees

The figures listed in the fees schedules are a guide only and represent the tuition fee for a normal full-time course made up entirely of papers from the specified subject area. However, many students take papers from various subject areas.

As a result, your actual tuition fee is calculated based on the fees for each specific paper that you include in your course.

Tuition fees may change from year to year. If your programme extends beyond a calendar year (January–December), you'll need to pay the updated fee for each year you study.

Tuition fees for students continuing their existing programme of study may only increase by a maximum of 5% per annum.

Approximate tuition fees for specific undergraduate programmes are listed on their qualification pages.

Additional costs to consider

Please note that tuition fees do not cover the following additional expenses:

Requesting a tuition fee receipt for your student visa

Tuition fee receipts are not generated automatically.

New students: Once you have received your Offer of Place and have made your payment, you can proceed with requesting a receipt.

Returning students: Once you have received your Confirmation of Enrolment letter (which you request from the Student Visa Team in the International Office) and have made your payment, you can proceed with requesting a receipt. Please attach your Confirmation of Enrolment letter to your receipt request.

To obtain a tuition fee receipt for your student visa application:

Log in to eVision and click the Request tuition fee receipt link from the My Finances section of the home page. Enter the required information about your payment and attach any relevant documentation, for example a copy of the payment transaction or for a returning student your Confirmation of Enrolment letter.

  • If we require any additional information from you to enable your tuition fee receipt to be issued, we will communicate with you via eVision (you will receive an alert notification). Please ensure you respond to these requests to reduce any potential delays in issuing your receipt.
  • Your receipt once issued will be sent to you via eVision. You will receive an alert notification when your receipt has been issued, and you will be able to download your receipt from within the alert.
  • Open the alert from your eVision portal and click the Download PDF button. You can then access your receipt from the Downloads section of your web browser. You can also download a copy of your receipt from the Completed Requests section of the View or Request tuition fee receipt for visa purposes option in the Finance menu.
  • Tuition fee receipts can only be issued once your payment has been received in the University of Otago's bank account. It can take several days for funds to clear from the time that you make payment.
  • We recommend that new students make their payment as soon as possible after receiving their Offer of Place to allow sufficient time to receive an official receipt from the Student Finance office and allow time for the student visa application.
  • If you need to send your receipt onto an agent, you will need to do this once you have downloaded the receipt in eVision.

Tuition fees for international PhD students

If you are an international Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student, you are eligible to pay domestic tuition fees. To be classified as a domestic fee-paying student, you must reside in New Zealand throughout your studies, except for approved temporary absences abroad for doctoral research.
PhD students' dependents pay domestic student fees for primary schools (approximately ages 5–12) and secondary schools (approximately ages 13–18).

Changes to your residency or citizenship status

International students who are granted New Zealand residency while enrolled may be eligible to pay domestic fees for the current year and for subsequent years (see below). To demonstrate a change of residential status, you must present an original passport along with a letter confirming your eVisa approval.

To be considered for a refund of fees to match the domestic fee level, the date of your residence visa award (as printed on the eVisa approval letter) must be prior to:
