Information for new patients

Overview

The Faculty of Dentistry is proud of the service we provide to the Dunedin and wider Otago communities, and we appreciate the support we receive.

At the Faculty you'll receive a high standard of care, either by a staff member or by students in training working under supervision. In either case, you will benefit from the latest evidence-based-practice techniques.

The Faculty of Dentistry clinical services has recently relocated to a new state of the art Clinical Services Building (CSB) which is located behind the Walsh Building in Great King Street. While the Walsh Building is being refurbished, the patient and public entrance to the Client Services Building (CSB) is at 33 Frederick Street.

As there are still building works being undertaken in the Walsh Building next door, we apologise for any noise and inconvenience that may occur. We ask for your patience during this time.

Treatment at the Faculty of Dentistry is not free of charge unless you are eligible for funded services which are outlined below. In some instances, funded services are subsidised so there can still be a small part-charge.

COVID-19

We have changed a number of practices as a result of COVID‑19:

  • We no longer accept walk in patients without an appointment. If you just arrive at clinic without an appointment, you will be sent away with advice on how to seek assistance.
  • In order to receive treatment, you must have completed telephone screening and have a booked appointment.
  • When you attend for an appointment, we need you to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your appointment. This is because we cannot have people sitting in the waiting rooms for long periods.

Step 1: Phone or email us

The first step is to either phone or email us to register your interest:

Email dental.clinicaladministration@otago.ac.nz

We’ll send you a patient enrolment form and questionnaire (by email or post).

Step 3: Wait list

When we receive your completed forms, you will be enrolled on our patient management system. We’ll add you to our wait list to be called to an appointment, so we can identify your treatment needs.

Please tell us if you are eligible for WINZ support and require a WINZ quote. To be eligible, you need to have a current Community Services Card.

If you are not eligible for WINZ support, but have a current Community Service Card, you may be eligible to receive subsidised treatment for urgent care. It's really important that you tell us at this stage (before you see a clinician).

Step 4: Clinical assessment

Triage is the assignment of degrees of urgency to patients with infections, illnesses, or injuries – to decide the order of treatment of a large number of patients requiring urgent care.

This can be undertaken over the telephone by a trained dentist.

The timing of when your appointment will be is based on the urgency of treatment required.

Step 5: Appointment

The first dentist you see at your appointment may could be a staff member or one of our trained students. They'll conduct an examination which may be limited in nature at this first visit.

The treatment you may require will be discussed with you. It may be possible to complete your treatment on the day, or it may be necessary to make an appointment for you to come back at a different time to complete your treatment.

The dentist or student examining you will discuss the proposed cost of the treatment with you so you are aware of what you will be required to pay. Some funded services still have a part payment for patients.

There’s a small chance we’ll recommend you visit a private dentist for further treatment (for example, if we aren’t able to manage your problem within a reasonable timeframe for you).

Step 6: Payment

The fees that you would be required to pay will be discussed with you prior to the treatment commencing. We request that following treatment you pay on the day when you leave the clinic. This can be at any reception desk. The Ground Floor Reception accepts all forms of payment and the Levels One, Two and Three accept EFTPOS payments only.

As well as paying invoices in person at reception, you can also pay by internet banking, or at your local bank. Please let us know if you anticipate difficulty in paying, as we might be able to help with advice or payment plans.
