The Division of Health Sciences, the School of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) and the Dunedin School of Medicine (DSM) fund projects in the biomedical, bioscience (including genetics), clinical or public health areas.

Please note: the project must be supervised by a staff member of the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Dunedin School of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy or School of Physiotherapy.

External sponsor scholarships

A number of scholarships will be funded by external sponsors, and have included in the past:

  • Elspeth Gold – for projects relating to men's health.
  • GlycoSyn – for projects related to viruses, anti-viral agents and small molecules.
  • Maurice and Phyllis Paykel Trust – for projects in any area of medicine or biomedical sciences. For second-, third-, or fourth-year medical students only.
  • National Heart Foundation – for projects in cardiovascular health and disease.

BMS Māori Summer Scholarship

Established by the BMS in 2015 to increase the number of Māori biomedical researchers and enable Māori students to reach their full potential. One scholarship valued at NZ$6,000 is offered each year.

BMS Pacific Peoples' Summer Scholarship

Established by the BMS in 2015 to increase the number of Pacific Island biomedical researchers and enable Pacific Island students to reach their full potential. One scholarship valued at NZ$6,000 is offered each year.

Important: All students applying for the Māori or Pacific Peoples' scholarships should:

  • Also apply for the other BMS- and OMRF-funded scholarships. Submit an application below.
  • Refer to the Handbook for details of the additional information that must be included in your application.

Applying for a Divisional, BMS or DSM Scholarship

If you would like to apply for a Divisional, BMS or DSM Scholarship, please note that there is one Handbook and one Application Form for all of the scholarships, including the BMS Māori and Pacific Peoples' scholarships.

All applications must be submitted online.

Submit your application

Only one PDF file (.pdf) can be uploaded. It must contain:

  • Your cover sheet
  • Project application (containing abstract, review of the field, proposed project, research interests)
  • Full academic record from eVision
  • Supervisor's letter of support

Name your file in the following format: surname_firstname.pdf
