Internally funded scholarships

The Division of Health Sciences and the School of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) fund projects in the biomedical, bioscience (including genetics), clinical or public health areas.

  • Two scholarships for Māori students supervised in the Division (Dunedin Campus)
  • Two scholarships for Pacific students supervised in the Division (Dunedin Campus)
  • Two scholarships for Māori students supervised in BMS (see details below)
  • Two scholarships for Pacific students supervised in BMS (see details below)
  • Two scholarships for non-human health projects supervised in BMS

Please note: To be eligible for the Divisional scholarships, the project must be supervised by a staff member of the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Dunedin School of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy or School of Physiotherapy .

BMS Māori Summer Scholarship

Established by the BMS in 2015 to increase the number of Māori biomedical researchers and enable Māori students to reach their full potential. Up to two scholarships valued at NZ$6,000 will be offered each year.

BMS Pacific Peoples' Summer Scholarship

Established by the BMS in 2015 to increase the number of Pacific Island biomedical researchers and enable Pacific Island students to reach their full potential. Up to two scholarships valued at NZ$6,000 will be offered each year.

A number of scholarships will be funded by external sponsors and will be listed below as they are confirmed.

  • Australian & New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine – one scholarship for a medical student doing a project relevant to older persons’ health
  • Heart Foundation – one scholarship for a heart disease project supervised in DSM
  • Maurice and Phyllis Paykel Trust – one scholarship for a medical student
  • Perpetual Guardian - McGillvray Brothers - one scholarship for a health sciences project

Applying for a Summer research scholarship

If you would like to apply for a scholarship through the Dunedin Summer Research Scholarship Programme, please note that there is one Handbook and one Application Form for all of the scholarships, including the BMS Māori and Pacific Peoples' scholarships.

All applications must be submitted to summer.research.scholarship@otago.ac.nz

Only one PDF file (.pdf) can be submitted. It must contain:

  • Coversheet
  • Application, including supervisor's letter of support
  • Ethical approval(s) (if applicable)
  • Full academic record(s) from eVision

Name your file in the following format: surname_firstname.pdf
