Study Environmental Management and help shape a sustainable future for Aotearoa and the world.

If you’re curious about how the Earth works and how humans shape it, this major is for you. You’ll explore how science, policy, culture, and society, including socio-cultural and Indigenous perspectives, come together to tackle global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource pressures.

At Otago we believe change comes from mixing the physical processes (how soils, water, ecosystems behave) with the social processes (how decisions are made, how people act, how laws and policy work).

You’ll gain skills that are more than just academic. You’ll build research, communication and analytical capabilities, so you can join multi-disciplinary teams, examine real problems, propose solutions, and work with communities or industry.

Whether you already feel strongly about environment issues, or you’re just discovering how much you care, this major gives you tools, context and the confidence to turn your values into action.

Career opportunities

With rising demand for sustainability and regulation expertise, Environmental Management graduates are in demand. Otago gives you the skills to make an impact.

Some career pathways include:

  • Planning and managing environmental or resource projects in government
  • Advising businesses on sustainability and regulation in consultancies
  • Leading community or ecosystem programmes with NGOs
  • Driving environmental performance in the private sector
  • Working internationally in conservation or sustainable development

How you will learn

Environmental Management at Otago is hands-on and focused on real-world challenges. You’ll combine lectures and tutorials with field trips to coasts, forests, and farmland, learning to collect data and use practical field techniques.

Case studies and group projects let you apply scientific knowledge, assess environmental impacts, and work with real stakeholders. You’ll gain practical experience in environmental assessment, policy analysis, and management tools.

By blending theory with real-world experience, you’ll graduate with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to tackle environmental challenges and make a difference in sustainability and environmental management.
