Academic life
Hayward College has a supportive and focused academic environment. Throughout the year, our staff will connect with each resident to discuss their academic choices, ability and aspirations. We can connect residents to any services they may need.
Tutorials
Residents are offered regular one hour tutorial sessions on the most popular first year papers. We share these tutorials with our sibling college, 192 and with Cumberland College also. If a tutorial on a particular paper has not been offered, residents can put in a request.
Quiet hours
Sleep and study are important to the majority of our residents so at 10:00pm we ask that all noise ends in corridors and bedrooms. Those that are still awake can chat and socialise in communal areas.
During the exam periods, we put in place special ‘study zone’ quiet hours. These times are agreed upon with the residents to help keep distractions to a minimum.
Social life
With so many opportunities to socialise, life is never dull at Hayward College. Throughout the year we have many events to look forward to. Highlights include:
- Theme dinners
- College hops
- The ball
- The Tekapo trip (snow sports and star gazing)
- Quiz nights
- Ice skating
We encourage our residents to create their own year so any suggestions are welcomed. Our staff are here to support you in making your time at Hayward a memorable experience.
Safety and security
Our main doors are locked at 5:00pm. Your ID swipe card gives you after-hours access. Overnight guests must be approved 24 hours before their arrival by the Warden, Deputy Warden or Assistant Warden. A security guard is on duty every evening from 10.00pm–6.00am.
Sport and recreation
The best thing about sport at Hayward is that everyone has the opportunity to join in. Accomplished or not, the opportunity is here to get involved in a wide range sporting activities. Organised teams complete against other colleges, and we book a hall weekly to play social sports between Hayward and 192 residents.
Our bike storage room has loads of space out of the elements, keeping your bike dry and secure.
Wi-Fi access
Free Wi-Fi access is provided as an extension of the University's network. Access is available in all areas including bedrooms.
