Love the outdoors and technology? Surveying turns them into a global career.

Why study Surveying / Surveying Measurement?

Strong employment prospects make Surveying an excellent career choice. Surveyors use drones, lasers and GPS technology to measure and map everything from building sites to the ocean floor. They define property boundaries, provide the data engineers and planners need for major projects, and create detailed 3D maps of our changing built and natural environments.

The Bachelor of Surveying (BSurv) is an internationally recognised qualification opening doors for you to live and work around the world. Most students secure work before graduation.

With modern technology labs, high-end field equipment and strong industry links, you’ll graduate with the confidence and experience to step straight into your career.

    Career opportunities

Surveying is an internationally recognised degree that gives you the skills to work on land, at sea, and everywhere in between.

    Possible career paths include:

    • Land development, infrastructure and construction projects in the private sector
    • Planning or geographic information system (GIS) roles in government and local authorities
    • Hydrographic and seismic surveying across marine and resource industries
    • Urban design, spatial analysis and environmental management
    • Land and property boundary surveying

    How you will learn

You’ll take part in field trips, practical classes and group projects that connect classroom theory with real-world problem-solving. Using the latest technology, from drones and lasers to advanced geographic information system (GIS) software, you’ll learn how to map cities, coasts and rural landscapes with precision and purpose.

As you progress, you’ll explore land law, planning, environmental management and geospatial science. You’ll build both technical expertise and professional judgement through teamwork, research and field experience.

Recommended high school subjects for undergraduate study

An interest in science, geography and technology is a great start.

Subjects such as maths, physics, geography and English are helpful but not essential. What matters most is curiosity about how the world is measured, mapped and managed.

    Further study opportunities

Whether you are looking to bridge your undergraduate studies to advanced knowledge or aiming to specialise in a specific field, Otago offers a range of graduate and postgraduate options to suit your aspirations.

New Zealand’s only undergraduate degree eligible for full professional recognition

Otago's School of Surveying is New Zealand's national centre for surveying education. Here you can learn from leading researchers and professionals working in Antarctic science, geospatial technology, hydrography, land tenure and environmental management.

At Otago, you'll mix outdoor fieldwork with high-tech analysis. One week you might be flying drones to map a site, the next you're processing laser scan data or learning the land law that underpins property rights.

Our Bachelor of Surveying is internationally recognised for licensing in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as New Zealand, giving you genuine career mobility if you choose to work overseas.
