Explore how faith, power and identity collide – and make sense of today’s world.

Why study Religious Studies?

The study of religions is more than just learning about beliefs - it’s about exploring what it means to be human in a diverse, changing world.

At Otago you’ll ask big questions: Why do people believe what they do? How do religions influence politics, art, law and identity? How do new movements and digital cultures reshape spirituality? Our programme uses tools from history, psychology, anthropology and sociology to dig into these questions.

Whether you’re curious about ancient traditions or present-day debates, Religious Studies gives you fresh perspectives and real-world relevance. You’ll train your mind, sharpen your voice and equip yourself for fields where insight, empathy and critical thinking matter.

Career opportunities

If you choose to major or minor in Religious Studies you’ll build skills in analysis, communication and cultural awareness – all highly valued in today’s job market. Here are some career pathways graduates often pursue:

  • Community engagement and social services
  • Education (secondary or tertiary)
  • Public policy or government roles
  • Media, journalism or communications
  • Business and marketing (especially roles requiring cross-cultural insight)

How you will learn

In Otago’s Religious Studies programme you’ll mix lectures, seminars and lively discussion. You’ll explore case-studies of religion in action – from debates about identity and rights to global movements and ancient traditions. Many papers are offered by distance too, so you can study online if you prefer. You’ll join a community of students and scholars who ask the big questions together, and you’ll gain real-world perspectives by connecting classroom ideas to contemporary life.

Since religion and faith are practised in such wildly varying ways around the world, my background has helped me to adjust my viewpoint when working in a multicultural office, and also at competitions.

Religious Studies

Explore religion by debating big questions and connecting them to the world around you

At Otago, our Religion programme stands out for its breadth and relevance. You’ll join a lively scholarly community that uses psychology, history, anthropology, politics and philosophy to study religion as a human phenomenon. Because religion shapes so much of human history and culture, our subject pairs easily with Anthropology, History, Classics, Politics and Philosophy. It also fits well with Commerce, Law and the Sciences – adding variety and depth to your degree. You’ll have access to great teaching staff, flexible distance-learning options, and the unique university city of Dunedin as your campus both on site and online.
