Otago Medical School Foundations Trust

Research support for all DSM staff:

  • who are PBRF eligible, and
  • whose appointment at the Dunedin School of Medicine (previous and future) is at least two consecutive years, and
  • who have confirmed salary for the duration of the project

Research in psychiatric illness, endocrinology, cardiac conditions, cancer, and medical are encouraged since some bequests specifically target these areas.

Up to $30,000 for new/replacement research equipment in DSM.

The James Hume Bequest

For research and new teaching initiatives in psychiatry by DSM or Faculty of Biomedical Sciences staff. Applicants must be PBRF-eligible; appointed for minimum 2 years (past and future), and not hold a current James Hume Bequest Award in the year the funding application is for.

The H.S. and J.C. Anderson Charitable Trust

Up to $50,000 for research into human disease by FoM-D or UoO Faculty of Biomedical Sciences staff.

Otago Medical Research Foundation 2025

Annual grants 2025 including Otago Community Trust grants 2025.

The Council of the Otago Medical Research Foundation Incorporated (OMRF) invites applications from principal investigators based in the Otago region for financial support of medical research relating to human health or the basic sciences.

Up to $40,000 for projects that are achievable within a one-year time frame.

Closing date: 13 June 2025.

DSM – New Researcher Start-up Award

Research support for new DSM academic staff (PBRF-eligible, ≥0.4 FTE ; within 2 years of starting employment)
(excludes clinical academics eligible for the HRS -Joint Clinical Academic Start-up Award)

HRS – Clinical Academic Establishment Award

Research support for new clinical academics who are employees of the Dunedin School of Medicine and/or Te Whatu Ora Southern. Eligibility assessments are considered quarterly by the HRS Board.

Freemasons NZ Scholarships in Paediatric and Child Health

These Scholarships are intended to provide support to a scholar whose programme of work or research would lead to a higher degree and whose work is within the field of Paediatrics and Child Health.

The HealthCare Otago Charitable Trust

To support research clearly linked to specific health outcomes or benefits for the communities of Otago. Funds most available are for fields of cancer, diabetes, and cardiology.

HealthCare Otago Charitable Trust – Bruce McMillan Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine

To benefit the public good by aiding training or education of health professionals based in Otago in a branch of Orthopaedic Surgery or Musculoskeletal Medicine.

DSM – Postgraduate Scholarships

To support students undertaking a postgraduate research degree at DSM. Each scholarship has a particular research focus and eligibility requirements – please see the Call for Applications.

Grants to support research projects led by staff of the Faculty of Medicine – Dunedin:

  • Whose appointment at the Faculty of Medicine – Dunedin includes research FTE, and
  • Who have confirmed salary for at least one year beyond the proposed project end date

Studies in cancer research, general medicine, and cardiac conditions are encouraged since some bequests specifically target these areas.

Projects must be completed in 2026, and requests for funding of $10,000–$55,000 are expected.
